Make-A-Way Honors Officer Who Deescalated BB Gun Incident Among Autistic Child

ARDMORE, Ala. (WAFF) – Make-A-Way is honoring an Ardmore officer, praising him for the way he handled a recent situation involving a child with autism.

Sergeant Michael Cole recently arrived at Cedar Hill Elementary School where an autistic child was seen playing with a BB gun.

Cole was able to calm the child and de-escalate the situation.

That’s why a local nonprofit awarded him a certificate of recognition Monday.

Cole says he was just doing his job.

“Once you know the situation is de-escalated and everyone is safe, the best thing to do is just talk to people. You never know what they’re going through or why they’re in that situation,” he said. “It’s overwhelming, but in some ways I don’t feel like I deserve it. This is my job, this is what I do, this is what I signed up for.”

Make-A-Way supports people with special needs and their families both at home and in the classroom.
