$2 million donation will help open new ‘supported living’ center for mentally ill people

More Tasmanians with serious mental illness now have access to a new $10.5 million housing stock in the state’s south.

The Glenson Place group home in Claremont includes 14 self-contained apartments for people living with conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression.

The Tasmanian Government contributed $8.5 million to the project, with the remaining $2 million funded by the Fairbrother Foundation.

Housing Minister Felix Ellis said the facility provided a safe and modern environment for people with mental illness.

“The project was developed with input from people with lived experience to ensure the needs of the most vulnerable people were met.”

All apartments are already rented and are located close to shops, public transport stops and green spaces.

“This development demonstrates what can be achieved when government and industry work together to deliver the best outcomes for Tasmanians in need,” Ellis said.
