Homicide investigation launched after man’s death and another injury in Hamilton

A murder investigation has been launched after one man died and another was injured in an incident at a community center in South Lanarkshire.

Emergency services were called to Burnbank Center in Hamilton at around 3.50pm on Monday after reports two men had been injured.

A 36-year-old man died on the spot, a 59-year-old man was taken to hospital.

Police have confirmed that a 56-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case and investigations are ongoing.

Closures of Whitehill Road and Purdy Street are expected to remain until midday on Tuesday, with members of the public asked to avoid the area.

Motherwell Police Station Superintendent Richard Taylor said: “We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.

“We have increased police presence in the area as we recognize this can be a very worrying and worrying time for the local community.

“Anyone who has concerns is asked to speak to these officers.”
