Cambridge road closed due to cracks

Engineers are currently monitoring the King’s Dyke Crossing in Whittlesey, which is being affected by the movement of the main embankment supporting the crossing.

The bridge opened in 2022 and was originally due to be built by Cyrus, but the firm abandoned the work in 2019 after being unable to agree on a price for the project due to concerns about ground conditions.

At the time, a representative for Kira said, “Once the design phase was completed, our pricing carefully took into account challenging ground conditions.”

Jones Bros Civil Engineering has been awarded the contract and is currently monitoring the movement of the embankment to determine the extent of repair work required.

An information note from Cambridgeshire County Council earlier this month said: “Temporary lane closures on King’s Dyke were introduced on 13 June 2024 as a precautionary measure after cracks appeared at the edge of the road.

“This closure occurs while our contractor, Jones Bros, carries out some testing and further monitoring to determine the cause of the breach.

“Jones Bros designers review test and monitoring results to help develop corrective work.

“We are unable to confirm a start date for refurbishment work due to design complexities which must be carefully considered when determining a solution.

“We continue to work closely with the contractor to understand why the cracks occurred, which is important for design purposes.”
