Driver killed in Upper Warren rollover as Washington grapples with how to stop deaths on state roads

A 57-year-old woman has died in a crash in the southwest region of Washington state as authorities try to figure out how to end the ongoing destruction on the state’s roads.

The woman was driving a Toyota HiLux which veered off course and rolled along Whitley Coast Road in rural Upper Warren about 2.35pm on Monday.

What caused the emergency is still unknown.

The Major Crash Unit is investigating and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.

The crash comes as a senior paramedic and a grieving Perth mother join a growing number of voices calling on WA drivers to be more careful behind the wheel.

There have been 149 road deaths in Western Australia over the past year, almost the same as at the same time in 2016, when 154 people died.

“The emotional side of (a serious accident) never gets easier and sometimes it gets harder,” said St. John’s, Wash., paramedic Simon Mentz.

“The more exposed you are to some of these traumatic things, the harder it can be to deal with them in the long run.”

Mentz, who has 14 years of experience as a paramedic, said he hopes his message can save lives.

“A lot of these devastating accidents are related to speeding, drugs and alcohol, unsafe driving, so I just want people to be safe,” he said.

Three men were killed when a Holden Colorado carrying six people crashed into a house in Carlisle early on Saturday morning.

George Te Kani, 22, was identified as one of the deceased passengers.

His mother, Rexina Hira, urged drivers to “do the right thing even when no one is looking.”

Adding to the carnage, two Indonesian nationals were killed in a two-vehicle crash on the Indian Ocean at Nergabbie, north of Perth, around 5pm on Saturday.

The WA Government is considering banning P-platers for passengers in cars.

“This is one of the issues that is under consideration and we also want to continue to look at other measures that will make our young people, our young road users, safer,” Western Australian Premier Roger Cook said.

Liberal leader Libby Mettam wants to see “more police on our roads”.
