SunLive – Hawks v Papamoa: T20 ends in super over

SunLive – Hawks v Papamoa: T20 ends in super over

A dramatic draw in the T20 Classic Builders Division 1 and 2 Championship between Hawks 1 and Pāpāmoa was the script for Saturday’s Western Bay of Plenty senior cricket clashes.

Hawks batted first and, thanks to Kuljeet Singh’s unbeaten half-century, scored 101 for the loss of nine wickets. Asa Bunbury was the best of Papamoa’s bowlers, taking three wickets for just 13 runs.

Papamoa’s reply also ended with 101 runs with four wickets in hand. Papamoa opener Hasit Gamage got his team off to a good start with 27 while Razib Dutta anchored the reply with 39, a marginally better run than a run-the-ball.

Hawks batted first in the T20 super over and made 11 runs for the loss of one wicket. Papamoa needed the last four balls to win, but he ran two and lost, which was a real test.

The Cadets’ third team secured an easy win on day two of the new season, beating Te Puke by nine wickets. Te Puke was restricted to 75/8 with Brydon Rhodes leading the way with 33 runs. Felix Payne led the Mount Maunganui win with 31 not out.

Another game that ended in disaster was the morning round between Baaj Sports 1 and Tauranga Boys College. Baaj’s opening line-up reached 132 for the loss of nine wickets. Varinder Sandhu top-scored with a game-best score of 30. Tauranga Boys’ College were on the verge of an upset but were bowled out for 129 with one ball to spare.

Western Bay of Plenty Cricket’s biggest rivalry 40-a-side cricket wrote another chapter at the weekend when the Grasshoppers and Albion met in the Classic Builders Division Three at Mitchell Park. The two came out on the other side in the mid-1980s, and the couple always took risks to show off when they dated.

The Grasshoppers batted first and were bowled out for 95. Craig Williamson top-scored with 35 runs and Matt Summerville grabbed a four-wicket bag. Albion had to dig deeper and came home with four wickets to spare.

Greerton challenged fellow contenders for the Classic Builders Division Four title as they scored 271 for just five wickets. Carter, Daniel Fitzgerald and Will Spargo won half-century belts against Bay Blasters Blue. Bay Blasters ended up falling 77 points short of their target, showing that Greerton look like genuine championship contenders.
