Forgotten Port Adelaide defender Tom Clury ruled out despite being under contract

Port Adelaide have delisted five players, including Tom Clury, despite the defender having a year left on his contract.

Quinton Narkle and Francis Evans, who both played in the preliminary final defeat to Sydney, were also ruled out along with Tom Scully and Kyle Marshall.

Clury was allowed to explore further opportunities to continue his playing career.

The 30-year-old has become a forgotten Power player in recent times.

He has played just one senior game over the last two seasons, and that was back in the 2023 third round.

During last year’s trade period, The Power added defenders Esavu Ratugol and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, pushing Clury further down the pecking order.

Before the club officially announced Clury’s departure, 7NEWS Adelaide reporter Josh Money reported the split was “amorous”.

“Understand that Port Adelaide defender Tom Clury will be released from his contract with a year left on his contract,” Money tweeted.

“It’s a friendly situation. The 30-year-old still feels he has a lot to give and knows that’s unlikely to happen in Alberton.”

Clury was a regular for Port Adelaide between 2017 and 2020, playing 81 games including three finals.

He signed a four-year contract extension in 2019 and added two more years in 2022 to take him through to the end of next year.

He has played 124 AFL games and can now sign anywhere as a delisted free agent.

“I enjoyed my time at Port Adelaide but now it’s time to move on and see what other opportunities exist for me to pursue a career in the AFL,” Clury said.

“Over the last 12 months the club has moved in a different direction with its defensive structure and personnel. Although I understand this, I still feel like I have more to offer.

“Like I said, I had a wonderful trip and made friends for life. “I want to thank all my teammates over the years, my coaches, staff and all the volunteers who have contributed so much and supported me during my time here in Port Adelaide.”

Narkle, who played 37 games for Geelong before being signed to the Power as a mid-season rookie in 2023, is reportedly set to train with Fremantle.

The five dismissals follow the departures of Charlie Dixon and Trent McKenzie, as well as the earlier exclusion of Tom McCallum.

The Power also traded Dan Houston during a busy trade period when they brought in Jack Lukosius, Joe Richards and Rory Atkins during a busy trade period.
