Murraylands retirement village in Murray Bridge, South Africa, is buying adjacent land for expansion.

The not-for-profit community organization’s retirement village in the city, 78 km east-south-east of the state capital Adelaide, has 67 independent living homes for people aged over 55.

Village manager Rowena Fox said she had purchased adjacent land from Scouts Australia, including a hall, which she would convert into a recreation center for the village.

“We already have a vacant plot of land next to the Scouts’ land on which we plan to develop approximately 18 apartments in the future. We are also hoping to purchase land from Murray Bridge Council which adjoins both our existing site and the Scouts’ site. This will allow us to take over the entire block and potentially increase the development from 18 units to 30 affordable units,” she said.

The city is proving to be a magnet for retirees, with Living Choice submitting plans to PlanSA in March to build 230 two- and three-bedroom homes on $100 million rental land in an “over-55s village” next to a golf course. RSL Care SA’s Waterford Estate retirement village, with 137 homes, is seeking to build a further six to meet demand.
