Artificial turf on the doorstep of Nga Puna Wai : News feed

Artificial turf on the doorstep of Nga Puna Wai : News feed

Two new artificial turf pitches are planned for Christchurch.

Public input has been opened on a concept plan that would see artificial pitches installed at Nga Puna Wai, the first of 12 planned for the town over the next decade.

The work is part of the Sports Grounds Network Plan adopted by Christchurch City Council in May.

Head of Parks Rupert Boole said Council worked closely with Sports Canterbury and regional sporting organizations on the plan and one of its key outcomes was the installation of artificial sports turf throughout the city.

“Our sports fields are used so well by players from different codes, especially in winter, so while it is great to see so many people playing, the fields are often damaged and closed in wet weather, limiting their use for games and training. – he said.

“This is not the case with artificial turfs – they allow for all-weather use, provide a stable playing surface and support heavy year-round use to a variety of regulations.”

Mr Boole said they would also have floodlights, meaning sporting events could be used for evening games and training.

The plan also includes a new entrance to the site built on Wigram Road, 168 car parks, changing facilities, a storm drainage basin and native plantings.

The land at 141 and 189 Wigram Road in Nga Puna Wai was selected as an existing council site in a low-rise residential area.

Plans to turn land on Wigram Road into synthetic sports pitches have been revealed.

This is currently undeveloped pasture, but construction of a park maintenance warehouse will soon begin on the site.

Public feedback on the plan will be considered by the Waipuna-Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Council, which will decide to approve the Ngā Puna Wai Sportsground landscape plan.

The construction timeline will depend on the results of the annual plan.
