Mazda’s take on the BMW X5 has arrived in Australia.

The full-size five-seat SUV, called the CX-70, joins its seven-seat twin CX-90 and the smaller five-seat CX-60 in the brand’s expanding lineup. A seven-seat version of the CX-60, called the CX-80, will also arrive this year.

Prices for the luxury five-seater start at $75,970 before on-road costs and rise to $84,970.

It follows the same formula as the CX-60, CX-90 and the upcoming CX-80, and is powered by a choice of 3.3-litre inline-six turbo-petrol or diesel engine, both with mild-hybrid assist.

The petrol engine produces 254kW and 500Nm, while the diesel engine produces 187kW and 550Nm. Both are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel drive all-wheel drive system.

It is available in only two trim levels: GT and Azami.

GT buyers can expect 21-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights and a panoramic sunroof.

Inside there is a 12.3-inch multimedia screen and a digital display of the same size.

Wireless Apple CarPlay combines with wired Android Auto, and a 12-speaker Bose stereo plays music.

The leather front seats are power-adjustable and heated, as are the rear seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Step up to the Azami trim and you’ll get plush black or burgundy Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, exterior tuning, interior lighting and a clear-view bird’s-eye view camera.

Azami variants can be upgraded with an optional $3,500 SP package that includes brown Nappa leather seat trim, synthetic suede on the dash and a two-tone steering wheel.

All CX-70 models are equipped with a full complement of active driving aids and safety technologies.

The CX-70 is on sale now, with first customer deliveries scheduled for later this month.
