CJN calls on FIRS to quickly transform operational structures – The Gazelle News

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has asked the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to expedite action to transform its operational structures for efficient service delivery in line with its tax collection mandate.

“I urge the Federal Internal Revenue Service to quickly transform its existing structures before attempting to introduce cutting-edge technological innovations,” the CBN said in Abuja yesterday.

The CJN emphasized the need to improve tax collection processes by establishing internal mechanisms to ensure effective management of the tax system.

The CJN made this statement at a conference organized by the FIRS for judges and magistrates in Abuja on Monday. The conference also aims to address the challenges posed by the digital economy and strengthen its role in tax compliance. The CJN expressed hope that the goal will be achieved.

Earlier, Muhammad Lawal Abubakar, the Coordinating Director of the Services Support Group, who represented the Chairman of FIRS, Zach Adedeji, said the aim was to make the most of the role of the judiciary in the Nigerian tax system to properly raise awareness of the role of the FIRS before , as is the federal government’s ongoing tax reform.

“This meeting symbolizes our commitment to working hand in hand, recognizing that our collective efforts can lead to a more efficient, effective and fair tax system. Let us continue to build strong bridges of cooperation, ensuring that together we create a legacy of justice, accountability and prosperity for Nigeria,” Abubakar said.

Kekere-Ekun said Nigeria benefits from international structures, however, despite these benefits, significant gaps between global tax strategies and Nigeria’s domestic tax system still need to be addressed.

She called on all national institutions bringing cases to the courts to note that the outcome of a decision often depends on the diligence of the institution presenting cases to the court.

Kekere-Ekun warned: “The determination often depends on the diligence of the institution presenting the cases in court.”

According to her, it is becoming increasingly clear that adapting to digital innovation is no longer optional, but necessary.

Adedeji said the judiciary “is the custodian of equity and fairness in our society. Your role in interpreting tax laws, resolving disputes, and enforcing compliance is critical to creating a climate of trust in our tax system.

“By upholding the rule of law and making fair decisions, you build trust among citizens and businesses alike, encouraging them to meet their tax obligations,” he told the assembled judges and judges.

Meanwhile, Abubakar boasted that the FIRS will reach its target of N19.4 trillion this year.

To that end, “the conference is one such area that we are focusing on as we prepare for next year when so much will be affected, including new laws expected to come into force from January 2025,” he said .
