Paid parking could be introduced in Melbourne city center

The City of Melbourne is considering a new proposal to introduce paid parking in certain areas of the city centre. The issue will be discussed at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

Parking in the area is currently free, but city officials say it has been an ongoing problem for years. In 2016, the city began exploring ways to manage parking spaces more efficiently. According to the city, store owners and employees often occupy the best seats reserved for visitors and shoppers.

The City’s plan calls for the creation of a Parking Management Program for Melbourne’s inner city. This will include a mix of paid, enforced and managed public parking. While some seats will remain free, officials have not yet determined which ones.

The proposal is part of a broader effort to address downtown problems. The city recently removed benches to discourage loitering and installed new CCTV cameras to combat crime. Community members were asked to weigh in on potential changes.
