Australian bars named among the world’s 50 best bars for 2024

The 50 best bars in the world have been announced in Madrid. Three Australian bars have made the prestigious list, voted on by a global academy of bartenders, critics and other industry insiders.

Melbourne Caretaker’s Cottage ranked 21st, up two spots from 23rd last year. The tiny but mighty bar also took home the title of best bar in Australasia, beating out Sydney’s Maybe Sammy, which has previously held the title every year since opening in 2019.

Maybe Sammy was named the 26th best bar this year (up from 15 last year), with judges praising its “AI-powered cocktail menus and even dance routines.”

Melbourne debuts in the top 50 at number 35. Birdiewhich the judges describe as “the most Australian bar in existence”. Melbourne’s Byrdi is new, combining casual, conversational service with concept cocktails.” In 2023, he was ranked 61st on the 51-100 longlist.

World’s 50 Best described Caretaker’s Cottage as “a charming bar that once served as the residence of the caretaker of a nearby church. Since opening, it has quickly become a favorite destination for locals and travelers alike, thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and dedicated owners.”

“While the drinks menu changes monthly and includes new creative concoctions, two staples remain: the famous super-cold signature Martini and a Guinness that rivals the best in Irish pubs. With its relaxed atmosphere and commitment to quality, Caretaker’s Cottage truly embodies the essence of a local pub.”

The caretaker’s cottage was awarded Age Good Food Guide Bar of the Year in 2023, when current Age Good Food Guide co-editor Ellen Fraser wrote in the guide: “Service is fast. It’s fun. Someone took their dog with them. The Caretaker strips away the pomp and pretense so often associated with cocktails of this caliber, layering personality into an already character-filled space.”

Earlier this month, two Australian bars were included in the 51-100 longlist: a tiny mezcal bar in a Sydney laneway. Cantina OK at number 96 and Melbourne is hidden Above the board at number 100.

The number one bar in the world in 2024 was awarded to Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico.

The Caretaker’s House was also announced as the winner of the competition earlier this year Michter Hospitality Award 2024. The awards were launched in 2019 to recognize one bar in the world where industry experts said they had the best hospitality experience during the voting period.
