Uber driver involved in Ezra Mama’s accident speaks out

EXCLUSIVE: The Uber driver who collided head-on with Broncos star Ezra Mam spoke exclusively to 9News, recalling the moment he rescued his four-year-old backseat passenger.

Marcel Van Den Camp says he will need help to overcome the anxiety he now feels about the disaster.

The 64-year-old Brisbane man works as an Uber driver to “meet new people” and “put smiles on faces”.

Today for the first time he remembered the moment of the crash.

“In an instant, a truck hit us. It was a terrible accident and I lost consciousness for a while,” Van Den Camp said.

He also recalled a desperate race to get his four-year-old passenger out of the back seat.

“The woman was saying, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,’ and I thought, ‘Oh my God, I need to do something,'” he told 9News.

“I tried the back doors but couldn’t open them, they were locked, so I went back to my door, reached to my side of the back door and unlocked it.

“So I pulled the girl out and they were pretty shocked, to say the least.”

Van Den Camp said no one from the Brisbane Broncos had contacted him.

“I haven’t heard anything, nothing from the Brisbane Broncos,” he said.

When the club asked why no one contacted the Uber driver, 9News said there would be “no comment.”

Van Den Camp hopes to return to work soon, but says the car he was driving is a write-off.

“I’m going to need help to get over the mental hurdles I’m experiencing and a little bit of anxiety when I’m sitting in the car,” he said.

The four-year-old girl suffered a fractured hip and returned to Queensland Children’s Hospital for a follow-up appointment. They say she is recovering well.

The family made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon in two weeks.

After the accident, Mam allegedly tested positive for a roadside drug test and has since checked into rehab as the police investigation continues.
