Exceptional 17 hectare property near Hamilton with land use options

Exceptional 17 hectare property near Hamilton with land use options

In 2001, Michael and Janet Bryant left the large Te Akau South sheep and beef farm where they raised their family and where Michael farmed for 38 years.

They found the ideal smaller version, located much closer to the city, on 17 hectares of fertile, flat and gently rolling land at Te Kohai, 10km north-west of Hamilton.

Janet says that suited them just fine.

“We raised our boys and were ready to give up farming on that scale. We were heading to New Plymouth when we saw this place so we stopped in. We loved the way it was laid out, with hills and plains, and it didn’t take us long to realize it had everything we needed. so as we were heading home from Taranaki we stopped in again and signed the contract on the bonnet of the car.

“We bought from people who ran quarter horses. We raise about 60 cattle pastures on the property.

“There are plantings of kahikatea here which provide us with a vibrant birdlife including pheasants, arborvitae and kotare, and we have a large garden with many trees where we grow feijoas, lemons and grapefruits,” says Janet.

However, with the family now living in New Plymouth, Hamilton and Morrinsville, Michael and Janet, although they will miss their livestock, are ready to downsize again and have hired Richard Thomson of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Hamilton, to sell the property. Richard says it offers an exceptional lifestyle close to the city and enough good quality land to create options.

“Although Michael and Janet used the 10 paddocks primarily for grazing cattle, dairy heifers and sheep, the large flat sandy area near the stockyards was historically used as a horse arena, and the ash soils of Mairoa are equally suitable for farming, where in this case an alternative for a new owner who is less careful with the land, renting out paddocks for growing corn may be an option.

“Built in 1993, Lockwood’s substantial two-storey, four-bedroom home is set in landscaped grounds overlooking the farm. Featuring an additional kitchen, two bedrooms, one bathroom and one living room, it can be used as a self-contained unit or Air B’n’B. The majority of the house is surrounded by a large covered terrace, ideal for enjoying the outdoors in sun or shade,” says Richard.

The proximity to Hamilton suggests the property may be suitable for future development.
