The guessing game about when the general election will be called is in full swing. One minute we hear that the Finance Bill will be delayed until after the midterm recess, which pushes everything back. The next, some behind-the-scenes TD has reporters speculating that the Taoiseach might want to hold the November polls after all.

The question is not when the elections will take place, but why should we care when the outcome seems predetermined. Irish politics is stuck in a cycle of rinse and repeat. With Sinn Féin now in apparent free fall, it looks likely that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will return to power, with the exception of the Greens.
