The Australian team paid tribute to Pearl Harbor and the events of 9/11.

During a port visit in Hawaii, the crew of HMAS Brisbane paid tribute to the fallen at the USS Arizona memorial.

The memorial honors the more than 1,000 sailors and Marines who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

This structure rises above the ruins of Arizona and serves as a powerful reminder of the tragedy that pulled the United States into World War II.

Commander Brisbane Commander Bernard Dobson and Seaman Jessica Brown laid a wreath on behalf of the ship.

Commander Dobson noted the significance of the visit, noting the deep bond and shared history of service and sacrifice between the Royal Australian Navy and its American counterparts.

“For many of the crew, this was their first time here, and it was clear how humbly they stood in a place that represents tremendous loss and the resilience of those who gave their lives in service to their country,” Commander Dobson said.

Continuing the spirit of mutual respect, Brisbane The crew also took part in an event commemorating the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 at Naval Station San Diego.

Australian sailors joined US Navy personnel and firefighters to climb the Pacific Beacon Towers stairs at the base in honor of the first responders who died during the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Leading Seaman Flynn Selke climbed more than 2,000 steps with his fellow maritime logistics crew, the equivalent of 110 floors of the World Trade Center.

He said he was honored to take part in the tribute.

“As I was climbing, I kept thinking how hard it would be in full firefighting gear,” said Leading Seaman Selke.

“I think it is important that we show our support at memorials across the U.S. to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, and also for people to come together to remember these tragedies.”

Brisbane is currently on a five-month deployment at US Naval Station San Diego to improve interoperability between the Australian and US navies.

During this period Brisbane will undergo routine maintenance, allowing for collaboration between support units of both navies, as well as joint training and capability development activities.
