The cost of demolishing the three structures is estimated at $100,000, according to the city attorney. The city will then attempt to recover the funds from the property owner by adding the cost to the property owners’ tax bill.

Not only is the city dealing with two recent hurricanes, but it is also trying to clean up the community from Hurricane Ian, especially properties that have not been impacted since the hurricane passed through the city more than two years ago.

Under the city’s unsafe structures program, property owners notice their structures are unsafe and are given 30 days to file an appeal. The city gives the property owner an additional 60 days on top of the 30 days to comply before deciding to demolish the structures using taxpayer money.

The three structures the city plans to demolish include the former Tropical Sunset building at 159/161 Estero Blvd. The building is still littered with debris from Hurricane Ian and poses a widespread danger to the community. A few months before Hurricane Yen, a fire broke out at the top of the structure, which was also never fully repaired.

City operations and compliance manager Frankie Kropacek says another 40 properties will likely have to be demolished by the time it’s all said and done.
