“I prayed that it wouldn’t get worse”: Tang Miaoling said her daughter had scoliosis at age 12, Entertainment News

Local actress Tang Miaoling said her daughter Megan has scoliosis, a condition in which the normally straight spine curves into a C or S shape.

In a video interview with Health Insured SG uploaded to Instagram yesterday (October 21), the 55-year-old said the diagnosis was made during Meghan’s sixth-grade primary school physical.

At the time, her scoliosis was mild and only required observation.

“When I found out she had scoliosis, I really hoped and prayed that the situation wouldn’t get worse,” Miaoling said.

However, after two years, the degree of curvature of her spine progressed.

“She was still growing at that time. Doctors foresaw that when the growth spurt occurred, her scoliosis would progress dramatically,” she explained, adding that her daughter wore a back brace for two years until she was 15 years old.

Now she is 25.

Miaoling later had to choose between allowing Megan to continue conservative treatment using a back brace or proceeding with surgery.

“I was worried because it was a major operation… How will it affect her life after this? Will she be able to bend over and tie her shoes?” – Miaoling said.

Ultimately, the family decided that spinal fusion surgery was the best option.

Miaoling also said that because she didn’t think “little children needed full insurance” at the time, she did not buy insurance for her children and had to pay about $9,000 out of pocket for follow-up consultations.

A rider is an optional add-on to an insurance policy that offers additional coverage at an additional cost.

She added that she immediately took out rider insurance for both her daughter and son after the surgery.

“Because my daughter had a pre-existing condition, it was excluded from coverage. I felt like it was kind of a failure,” she said.

Five years have passed since Megan’s surgery, and Miaoling said the family can now engage in physical activity together without the limitations of surgery.
