LIVERPOOL SPEEDWAY ROARS AGAIN – OZ Arab Media

LIVERPOOL SPEEDWAY ROARS AGAIN – OZ Arab Media

Liverpool Green Valley Speedway was once a world famous racing venue, attracting cars and drivers from around the world, as well as tens of thousands of spectators.

Place of pace Liverpool Speedway 1967-1989 – which opened today at Liverpool Regional Museum – is a five-month exhibition showcasing memorabilia and memories from when Liverpool was a speedway mecca.

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannun said the circuit, founded by a local family, had become a huge attraction for the city.

“Three-time mayor of Liverpool and local businessman Frank Oliveri founded the circuit in 1967.

“At its peak it was owned by legendary Australian motorsport commentator Mike Raymond of Channel 7.

“Many people simply knew it as Pace’s Place, where they went to see Tar Stars.”

“It put Liverpool on the international stage, attracting rivals and, of course, tens of thousands of spectators,” he said.

“As a result of a major victory for the management and promoters of Liverpool City Raceway, the track became the final of the 1982 World Speedway Pairs Championship.

“This will be the only time in the 26 years of the World Pairs Championship (1968-1993) that it has been held outside of Europe.

“One of the cars that raced on the speedway, the Compact Speed Car, owned and raced by three-time Australian champion and Australian Speedway Hall of Famer Ron Hutchinson, is on display, as well as memorabilia from the Oliveri family.

“We thank the Oliveri family for not only founding Liverpool Speedway and truly putting Liverpool on the international stage, but for preserving all of these materials and so generously providing them,” Mayor Mannun said.

The exhibition features videos of the speedway in action, promotional materials, a speedway car and speedway bike, equipment and items for drivers.
