Sentences given to pedophiles caught in child abuse images to be reassessed in victory for The Sun campaign

SENTENCES given to pedophiles caught with child abuse images will be reviewed in a victory for The Sun’s Keep Our Children Safe campaign.

Landmark review how offenders are punished will be announced today by the Justice Minister as she faces jail overpopulation crisis.

The Sun's campaign reflects concerns over the suspended sentence given to disgraced newsreader Huw Edwards.

Our campaign calls for anyone found to be in possession of the worst category of images to be jailed.

It reflects concerns about the suspended sentence given to the disgraced newsreader. Hugh Edwards.

Former Lord Chancellor David Gauke will preside over the verdict.

Judges may be given power sentence detainees to serve time under house arrest, and technologies such as smart watches can be used to monitor those on probation.

Mr Gauke said the review would examine what punishment “should look like in the 21st century”.

It comes on a day when another 1,100 criminals are being released early to free up space in prisons.

Justice Minister Ms Mahmood said: “We now have the opportunity to change and redefine what punishment looks like outside of prison.”

She added: “I believe in punishment. I believe in prison, but I also believe that we should increase range the punishments we use.

“And that those prisoners who have earned the right to change their lives should be encouraged to do so.

“A review of sentences will ensure that prison and punishment work and that there is always a cell waiting for dangerous criminals.”

A Sun investigation has found that dozens of pedophiles who possessed a million images of sick people received ZERO days in jail.
