US Grand Prix driver ratings: Lewis Hamilton's lowest finish of 2024 Formula 1 season

Charles Leclerc – 9

Leclerc drove a brilliant race and took his third Formula 1 victory of the year. He was perfect on the first lap, passing three cars to take the lead. From that moment on, he never looked back.

Carlos Sainz – 8.5

One of Sainz’s strongest weekends of the year. His performance in the sprint race was stunning, with some outstanding maneuvers on Leclerc and then Norris. Despite an early pit stop, his speed on the hard tires was fantastic, helping Ferrari secure another 1-2.

Max Verstappen – 9.5

Verstappen maxed out the RB20 in Austin. He easily won the sprint race before finishing on the podium in the Grand Prix. He then put on a defensive masterclass to keep Norris at bay for a few laps.

Lando Norris – 8

There’s no doubt that Norris’ speed is incredible, as demonstrated by his first lap in Q3 on Saturday. However, mistakes in the sprint and indecisiveness against Verstappen (on the opening lap and during their subsequent battle) saw him run away from Austin in second place in the title race.

Oscar Piastri – 7

Piastri was never at the level to qualify for the podium in Austin. In his own words, it was a “boring” race for the Australian.

George Russell – 6.5

Russell played a major role in sprint qualifying and put him on the front row of the grid. But the upswing stopped there as Mercedes retreated. Things only got worse for Russell when he crashed in Q3, forcing him to start from the pit lane. Although he managed to recover and finish sixth, overall it was a poor weekend.

Sergio Perez – 5.5

A typical weekend for Perez in 2024: slow and rarely appearing in the front row.

Nico Hulkenberg – 7

Hulkenberg was unable to capitalize on Haas’ pace in traditional qualifying due to two errors in Q2. Excellent strategy and strong race pace made up for a poor Saturday with another points finish.

Liam Lawson – 8

Lawson’s true potential in qualifying was masked by his 60-place grid penalty due to the new engine. The Kiwi showed his talent in the race, optimizing RB’s smart strategy of going long with a favorable tire setup.

Franco Colapinto – 8

Colapinto continues to compete for Williams. He outscored Albon in sprint qualifying but narrowly missed out on beating the Thai rider on Saturday. The Argentine later said that he pushed Williams to take him to hard court, and this decision turned out to be decisive for getting into the top 10.

Kevin Magnussen – 7.5

Magnussen had one of his best weekends of the season. A rare appearance in the third quarter, but the two-stop strategy proved unprofitable.

Pierre Gasly – 7.5

Gasly was arguably the star of qualifying, finishing seventh in the upgraded Alpine. Unfortunately, like Magnussen, his strategy failed him.

Fernando Alonso – 7.5

Alonso outclassed the Aston Martin to make it through Q3 at the Circuit of the Americas. He simply fell behind in the race, which was not his fault.

Yuki Tsunoda – 6.5

Although Tsunoda was annoyed by the strategy used by RB, his spin in the first turn cost him the opportunity to finish in the points. His speed was there, but it didn’t quite match.

Lance Stroll – 6

An anonymous weekend for Stroll, who lacked speed compared to Alonso.

Alex Albon – 4

This may have been Albon’s worst weekend yet for Williams. He spun in SQ1 and only narrowly beat his rookie teammate Colapinto in regular qualifying. He was then involved in a collision with Ocon on the first lap which left him damaged.

Valtteri Bottas – 6.5

Bottas continued his impressive streak of victories over teammate Zhou in all but one race this year. Although the Sauber was still the slowest car, it performed well in the midfield, but it was not enough to qualify for a top ten position.

Esteban Ocon – 6.5

At first glance, Ocon was far behind his Austin teammate Gasly. However, the former Force India driver drives the Chinese version of the car (the Chinese GP took place in April). He actually set the fastest lap.
