Cameron Mooney’s best and worst clubs for the 2024 AFL trading period

Three-time premiership forward Cameron Mooney has listed his top three and two worst clubs for the 2024 AFL trade period.

Each team made moves during the trade and free agency windows, and Mooney picked the clubs he thought did better and worse.

He explained each of his choices on Warm up with Worlo and Moons.

Top performing clubs

Hawthorn

IN: Josh Battle, Tom Barruss. OUTSIDE: Zero. Draft hand: 33, 71, 77.

“Of course, Hawthorne, I think they’re great,” Mooney said in an interview. Warm up with Worlo and Moons.

“I know Josh Battle came in as a free agent, but I’m just throwing him out for this period as well.

“With Tom Barruss and Battle they got exactly what they wanted.

“They’ve been drafted for the last three or four years, they’ve got all the kids they don’t need anymore.

“They are here now – I pick them for the top four castle.

“Secure them for a spot in the top four.”

Carlton

IN: Nick Haynes. OUTSIDE: Matt Owis, Matthew Kennedy. Draft hand: 3, 38, 63, 68, 69, 72.

“They had Matt Owis who they got out the door and somehow they ended up with the third pick in that deal.

“I think this is one of the most incredible deals.

“I don’t think they’ll really miss Matt Kennedy, he’s a really solid player, but they have enough players like that… they need foot speed.

“Well done Carlton.”

Richmond

IN: Zero. OUTSIDE: Liam Baker, Shai Bolton, Jack Graham, Daniel Rioli. Draft hand: 1, 6, 10, 11, 18, 20, 23, 24.

“I give Richmond a huge tick.

“They just had elections left, right and center, and everyone told them to do it.

“Just get rid of everyone worth anything, collect all the pickaxes and start again.

“Well done to them.”

Teams with the worst records

West Coast

IN: Liam Baker, Matt Owis, Jack Graham. OUTSIDE: Tom Barruss, Jack Darling. Draft hand: 12, 26, 73.

“Liam Baker is a very good player, I’m not sure he’ll be much of a game changer, but he’s a very solid citizen and you’re bringing in Owis well, who Carlton didn’t want.

“But when you lose the third pick, I’m not sure I’m a West Coast guy, and I’m thrilled about that.

“As for Baker, I love him, but for the trio it’s very important.”

Port Adelaide

IN: Jack Lukosius, Joe Richards, Rory Atkins. OUTSIDE: Dan Houston. Draft hand: 13, 29, 36, 50.

“Port Adelaide has not had the best trading period.

“Poor old Ken Hinckley, they’re just trying to push him out the door, I swear to God.

“You’re losing Houston, a two-time Australian international and one of the best flanker-midfielders in the game.

“He and his partner wanted to come to Melbourne, but not to north Melbourne.

“And obviously the Melbourne Football Club came knocking and they said, ‘It’s not for me,’ and that’s probably not a bad decision.

“They get Lukosius and Atkins, which is probably not what I thought (since I lost to Houston).

“Lukosius is very, very talented, but a man of few words. He can give you great things, or He can give you rubbish.

“He needs to get his finger out.”
