With seven Formula 1 World Driver’s Championship titles – a number equal to Michael Schumacher’s Formula 1 record – Lewis Hamilton has been in the headlines almost constantly, cementing his status in Formula 1 history and even earning a place in the racing circuit. TIME’List of “Most Influential People”.

However, there is more to the 38-year-old Brit than just motorsport and media frenzy. Hamilton advocates for social justice in motorsports and beyond, championing Black Lives Matter and opposing anti-LGBTQ legislation. He also dabbled in arts and entertainment, recording music with stars such as Christina Aguilera and founding the production company Dawn Apollo Films. These efforts, scattered across so many sectors, make Hamilton something of an enigma—a Renaissance man characterized by tireless creativity. Teaming up with Kim Jones for the Dior x Lewis Hamilton winter capsule collection, Hamilton tells her story through skiwear.

“Working with Kim and the talented team at Dior has been a dream come true,” says Lewis Hamilton. “I was honored when Kim asked if I wanted to do it with him.” It’s not hard to see why: Ever since Kim Jones took the reins at Dior, she’s become something of a tastemaker. In his previous work, the designer referenced artists such as Otani Workshop and Hylton Nel, who translated sartorial stories into new visual languages. It’s a true collaborative enterprise: Jones involves his colleagues in the design process, infusing the clothes with the authentic contributions of his colleagues.

At its core, the collection is a fusion: a concept that permeates each garment, leaving its mark on patterns, materials and even production technologies. It’s a green flag for Hamilton as the Formula One driver says Jones understands his vision. “Our values and ideas are aligned,” says Hamilton, “which makes it easy to bring to life a creative collection infused with our shared experiences.”

The capsule circles the globe, drawing parallels between the artistic traditions of Europe and Africa, synthesizing materials and practices. Jones and Hamilton are breaking new ground by filling the Dior x Lewis Hamilton capsule with fresh daywear suits, using traditional Dior tweeds and African fabrics in equal measure. The materials also have symbolic meaning: Both men have “a desire to celebrate Africa and an interest in the craft processes and techniques that combine African craftsmen with the craftsmanship of the Dior atelier,” Jones says.

Denim is the third pillar, created from organic or recycled textiles. “We share a love of nature,” Jones explains. His portfolio reflects his love for sustainable fashion. Under Jones’ leadership, Dior has cleverly adapted to climate change by collaborating with Parley for the Oceans to create new fabrics from waste.

When working in the clothing industry, nature—or more accurately, sustainability—is especially important. Clothing is closely related to material culture, interacting with the environment at many stages in this process. Climate shapes consumer needs and production methods. “It’s important to keep this in mind when creating a new collection,” says Hamilton. “The focus on making conscious choices and pushing boundaries with each piece, as well as incorporating inspiration from my roots in Africa – drawing from their fabrics and belief in natural materials, as well as vibrant colors and powerful energy – was very inspiring,” adds the Formula driver -1. .

In addition to organic and recycled textiles, there is also an emphasis on “reusable” clothing, with jackets, trousers and outerwear going beyond just one season. Jones and Hamilton take inspiration from Japanese technical skiwear, finding ways to create functional and fashionable weather protection. Carefully crafted accessories include the Dior 8 Backpack and Messenger Rider 2.0, which are optimized to keep debris out in any climate (without sacrificing Dior’s signature sleekness). Retro-inspired offerings such as Dior Snow Derbys in microfiber or B44 Blades add a nostalgic touch to sustainable sportswear.

Comfort, an essential component of outdoor culture, is also of great importance in the new capsule. “I hope that people all over the world will feel good in these clothes that we have so carefully designed,” explains Hamilton. It’s a fitting sentiment for a sportswear collection, as the category emphasizes rugged design and practicality. In fact, Jones credits Hamilton for instilling these values: “This collection also reflects Lewis’s sporty side, his virtuosity and our functionality,” says the designer.

Throughout the capsule, you’ll feel the palpable passion of both Jones and Hamilton – authenticity emanating from every thread. Commenting on the collaboration, Kim Jones says it best: “Overall, the way it all came together was very organic – and enjoyable!”
