DVIDS – News – GAFB Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas — Goodfellow Air Force Base celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on Oct. 15 with a vibrant cultural event. The event highlighted the culture and contributions of Latinos in the military. As of 2020, 15.6% of active-duty Air Force personnel are of Hispanic or Latino descent.
Hispanic Heritage Month, observed annually from September 15 to October 15, celebrates the anniversary of the independence of Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and pays tribute to generations of Latinos who have positively impacted the country’s history and culture.
The celebration featured a variety of cultural events, including traditional dance performances, live music and displays of Latin American art and artifacts.
“It is important to recognize our diversity in the Air Force because much of our service comes from many parts of the world. Every time we take the time to properly acknowledge diversity, it boosts the morale of those with deep roots. in historical or cultural sites from all over the planet. It lets them know that they are also valued as members of the Department of Defense,” said Lt. Col. Jose Quintanilla, 17th Logistics Support Squadron commander. “As a Mexican American born in the United States. I grew up in Mexico and grew up in the United States, and I appreciate the opportunity to enjoy part of the culture I grew up in while being surrounded by my peers.”
Senior Airman Evangeline Finley, coordinator of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, spoke about preparations for this year’s event.
“We asked military personnel to share what they would expect to see at such an event, which prompted us to organize a Mariachi band and flamenco dancing, as well as provide traditional sweets for those who attended. By reaching out to local organizations, we were able to secure the resources needed to support the celebration,” Finley said.
Goodfellow’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration was aimed at increasing cultural awareness and strengthening community connections, reflecting the base’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The month of celebration provides time to reflect on the diverse experiences that promote unit cohesion and mission readiness.
