Tuesday preview: Investors await IHG updates, comment from a Central Bank representative

Review of trading for the third quarter from InterContinental Hotel group will be in focus on Tuesday, with corporate earnings and economic data calendars remaining relatively quiet.

Markets have not received news from IHG since August 6, but the share price has risen 17% since then, so expectations are likely to be high for Tuesday’s announcement. The stock is up about 50% over the past 12 months.

In the first half, revenue grew 4% to $2.32 billion, with revenue per available room (RevPAR) up 3.0%.

UBS analysts expect IHG to report RevPAR growth slowed slightly to 2.7% in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, down from 3.2% in the second, although consensus calls for growth of just 2.1%.

Unsurprisingly, UBS forecasts that conditions in China will worsen, with RevPAR falling 9% after falling 7% in the second quarter. RevPAR growth in the Americas is also expected to slow to 2.25% from 3.3%, but EMEA RevPAR growth should remain relatively stable at 6%, down from 6.3% in the second quarter, UBS said. .

Also on Tuesday, investors will be closely watching the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, DC, where the heads of the Bank of England and the European Central Bank are scheduled to speak.

While both are unlikely to break new ground, forward-looking statements regarding inflation and economic growth will be closely watched for signs of how monetary policy may pan out for the rest of the year.
